Join us Friday, June 26th at 7 pm at Fugitive Books (Korreweg 14) for a movie screening of Cheila: Una Casa Pa’ Maita (2010).

The movie follows Cheila, a transgender woman who returns home to her mother in Venezuela, needing support before undergoing surgery. Cinematography, despite not being the best, takes many risks and creative freedoms to tell the story of a typical Venezuelan family who has to come to terms with Cheila’s queerness, as trans people have always existed, seen or unseen. Moreover, the film explores what it is like to be trans in Venezuela, and the difficulties that arise when systems of oppression intersect.

With this movie screening, we would like to fundraise for SOMOS, a queer activist group which leads the Mérida LGBTIQ centre in Venezuela 🇻🇪. The Center offers recreational, cultural and political activities and a range of free health and psychological support services, legal support, endocrinological guidance service for trans people, free daily food, HIV tests, safe temporary accommodation for people who are survivors of violence in homophobic environments, and documentation. After the documentary, we will have a short discussion where everyone is welcome to share their thoughts.
